A Hampton Roads native, Tata specializes in intellectual property litigation, including trade secrets, copyrights and patents, and 20 years ago, he won the state’s then-largest copyright award — $116 million — awarded by a jury over a home fire-escape ladder invented by a local businessman. He also has spent a great deal of time defending companies in personal injury and wrongful death cases in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Tata’s name is familiar in part because of his father, the longtime Virginia Beach Del. Bob Tata, who died last year. The junior Tata graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and earned an MBA from Old Dominion University and a law degree from the University of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and retired in 2009 as captain.
He also has engaged in many civic organizations, including being named the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival’s Triton in 2012 and serving on boards at ODU and Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia. He also is active in the Virginia Beach Bar Association, where he is a past president.
