Since 2015, McDermott has led the not-for-profit hospital system that includes two hospitals in Fredericksburg and Stafford County, three emergency departments and about 50 clinics and other outpatient facilities, as well as more than 5,000 health care professionals, including 600 doctors.
McDermott is a past chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, which advocates on behalf of hospitals and health care systems, and he continues to serve on its board. Generating $895 million in revenue in fiscal year 2021, Mary Washington in 2023 will launch its new Graduate Medical Education program, allowing new medical school graduates to serve as residents at Mary Washington Hospital and the system’s outpatient facilities. The program was started in part to address staffing shortages. Nearly 10% of Virginia hospitals have critical staffing shortages, according to U.S. Health and Human Services Department data released in August.
A radiologist, McDermott previously practiced with Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg and is a graduate of Villanova University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
