Health Care 2023: NANCY HOWELL AGEE

Trained as a nurse, Agee oversees a $2.4 billion health system that employs 14,000 people and serves more than 1 million people in western Virginia and West Virginia. Carilion Clinic includes seven hospitals and has a physician group with more than 1,000 doctors, plus outpatient clinics, home health services, freestanding surgical clinics and pharmacies.

Before becoming president and CEO in 2011, Agee served as executive vice president and chief operating officer, helping lead Carilion’s reorganization from a collection of hospitals to a fully integrated health system. The reorganization resulted in a partnership with Virginia Tech to create an allopathic medical school and research institute.

Earlier this year, Carilion established a department of neurosurgery to meet the growing demand for care in the specialty. It also received a $1.9 million state grant to support opioid abuse treatment expansion, and Carilion and partners received $15.7 million in state funding to develop a biotechnology incubator and lab space. In May, Carilion’s senior vice president and chief operating officer, Steve Arner, was promoted to president, with Agee remaining CEO.
