Levy was appointed to lead the VCU Health System last year on an interim basis, having served as chief medical officer of the VCU Medical Center and director of the Hume-Lee Transplant Center. He replaced Dr. Art Kellermann, who resigned in November 2022.

In the past year, VCU Health’s Massey Cancer Center was designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, and the $420 million Children’s Tower opened with the region’s only Level 1 pediatric trauma center.

But in May, controversy erupted when it was revealed the health system paid nearly $73 million to back out of a $325 million development deal that would have included an office tower for VCU Health. Levy noted in a statement that the 2021 deal’s costs rose beyond the system’s expectations, and exiting the project allowed VCU to avoid “far greater financial obligations and problems in the future.”

A graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School who was formerly chief of staff for Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Texas, Levy specializes in kidney and liver transplant surgery. He joined VCU in 2015.
