SENATE MINORITY LEADER, SENATE OF VIRGINIA, WILLIAMSBURG
Virginia Business// August 29, 2022//
A Republican mainstay, Norment has been in Virginia’s Senate since 1992 and is the current minority leader, a position that holds significant sway in the narrowly divided political body, where Democrats hold a one-vote majority. He serves on the Senate committees for finance and appropriations, and commerce and labor.
As the General Assembly moved toward marijuana legalization — a somewhat, but not totally partisan issue — Norment has supported decriminalizing cannabis. He has also received multiple ‘A’ ratings from the Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s legislative report card, in recognition of his business-friendly voting record.
A former member of James City County’s Board of Supervisors, Norment is a graduate of William & Mary’s law school and Virginia Military Institute. Norment has had brushes with controversy, including a 2001 DUI arrest and having a relationship with lobbyist Angela Bezik, whom he married in 2018. He also locked horns with Republican state Sen. Amanda Chase, who was censured in 2021.
