SENATOR, UNITED STATES SENATE, ALEXANDRIA
Virginia Business// August 29, 2022//
Like his colleague Tim Kaine, Warner served as governor of Virginia before being elected to represent the commonwealth in the U.S. Senate, where he is serving his third term as the state’s senior senator.
A moderate Democrat who often works with colleagues across the aisle, Warner chairs the Select Committee on Intelligence and serves on the finance subcommittees that govern energy, natural resources, infrastructure and international trade. After starting two unsuccessful businesses in the 1980s, Warner struck gold in cell phones, co-founding Nextel and Capital Cellular Corp. His net worth reportedly exceeds $200 million.
His time as governor, from 2002 to 2006, was marked by business-friendly practices, and as a senator, Warner co-founded the Senate’s cybersecurity caucus in 2016. He recently introduced legislation to prohibit online platforms from using deceptive interfaces — “dark patterns” — that trick consumers into disclosing personal data. Warner also supported the $280 billion Chips and Science Act, which was passed in July; he’s been working to bring more semiconductor chip makers to Virginia.
