Not long after earning a degree in business management from Fitchburg State University, Ryan accepted a technology position at Marlborough, Massachusetts-based Digital Federal Credit Union.
“My career sort of found me,” he told creditunions.com.
Ryan stayed for more than two decades, leaving Digital Federal as executive vice president and chief operating officer in 2012 to run Langley Federal. He had big shoes to fill, replacing Jean Yokum, who led the credit union for 33 years.
A decade into the job, Ryan seems to have met the challenge. The Credit Union Executives Society named Ryan its 2021 Outstanding Chief Executive. He’s grown the credit union’s assets from $1.7 billion to about $4.2 billion. Langley Federal has 22 branches and more than 320,000 members.
Ryan serves on the boards of the Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula and Langley for Families Foundation, which donated in excess of $1.5 million to charity in 2021.
NEW LIFE EXPERIENCE: I became a grandpa three years ago and it’s by far the best job I’ve ever had.
FAVORITE VACATION SPOT: Kennebunk, Maine. I hope to retire there, but maybe skip the winters.
