In 2020, Duvall returned as president of Virginia Natural Gas after serving in the role from 2014 to 2016. In between, he worked as senior vice president of customer operations for Southern Co. Gas, VNG’s parent company.
In his role, Duvall is responsible for the delivery of natural gas to more than 300,000 customers in southeastern Virginia. He joined Southern Co. Gas as a distribution engineer at Atlanta Gas Light in 1984, after graduating from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Duvall also serves on the Hampton Roads Chamber board.
His leadership came at a challenging moment for VNG; the company had committed to distribute gas through the Atlantic Coast Pipeline before the Dominion Energy Inc.-driven project was canceled in July 2020. VNG also sued a developer of a proposed Charles City County natural gas plant that fell through, arguing Novi Energy failed to reimburse more than $2 million to the utility. In June 2021, a federal judge ruled in favor of VNG, awarding it $2.1 million.
