For the last decade, Gluski has championed renewable energy production and carbon emission reduction as the head of AES, a Fortune 500 electric utility that generates and distributes power to 14 countries.

AES has used renewable power generation for years. In 2021, Gluski announced a plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions from electricity sales by 2040. Perhaps Gluski’s single largest contribution to renewable energy is his push to develop power storage options. The industry needs that to keep renewable energy flowing. Solar farms, for example, produce power only during the day, but that power must be stored to keep electricity supplied at night.

To tackle the problem, Gluski joined forces in 2018 with global technology company Siemens Energy AG to form a jointly owned company, Fluence. One of the world’s largest suppliers of power storage solutions for the grid, the startup raised $125 million from Qatar in 2020.

Raised in Venezuela, Gluski held positions in banking, telecom  and at the International Monetary Fund before joining AES in 2000. He’s held several positions at the company, including chief operating officer, president for Latin America and CEO of AES Andes SA in Chile.

Gluski earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Virginia. He is the chairman of the Americas Society Board of Directors.
