After nearly 50 years as pastor of Alaska’s prominent Anchorage Baptist Temple, Prevo became Liberty University’s interim president in summer 2020 after Jerry Falwell Jr. resigned amid scandal.

In addition to inheriting the state’s largest college by enrollment (Liberty reported 2021 enrollment of 95,148 students, most of whom are remote-learning students), Prevo also inherited a lawsuit brought against the school by former students and employees alleging that Liberty “intentionally created a campus environment where sexual assaults and rapes are foreseeably more likely,” and that victims were discouraged from reporting incidents. In May, 20 of 22 plaintiffs settled their lawsuits against Liberty.

Meanwhile, Liberty’s $10 million breach of contract lawsuit against Falwell Jr., who claims the school has not yet returned some of his property — including a revolver he kept in his desk — was still in court as of August.

The Liberty Flames’ new football stadium is scheduled to open in time for this fall season, and a new center named for Falwell Sr. is set to be finished in 2023.

Liberty has hired an executive search firm to find a replacement for Prevo, the Christian university’s former board chair, by fall 2023.
