Arlington County says yes to 173-unit affordable housing project

The Arlington County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a request from the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH) to move forward with Gilliam Place, a project that would provide 173 apartments and 8,950 square feet of ground floor retail and civic space.

Today’s action authorizes the use permit, rezoning and an Affordable Housing Investment Fund (AHIF) allocation for the $68 million project, which will be located on the site of Arlington Presbyterian Church in Columbia Pike’s Town Center.

APAH began its work with Arlington Presbyterian Church in 2012. “The congregation of Arlington Presbyterian Church is excited to see our vision for the future of our church property move one step closer to realization,” Reverend Sharon Core, the church’s pastor, said in a statement.

Gilliam Place will provide resident services and offer 17 barrier-free units. The project will be marketed to low-income individuals, active seniors and families and is envisioned as an intergenerational community.

In March, APAH plans to apply for low income housing tax credits allocated by the Virginia Housing Development Authority. If approved, construction will start in 2017, with the project expected to be complete by late 2018.
