ADP announces plans to bring 1,800 new jobs to Norfolk

New Jersey-based human resources firm Automatic Data Processing Inc.  (ADP) announced Tuesday plans to invest $32 million to establish a regional customer service center in Norfolk. The project would create about 1,800 jobs, making the company the largest employer in the city’s downtown.

“This announcement represents a once in a generation economic development,” said a statement on Norfolk’s website. “ADP will create a substantial number of well-paying jobs, fuel the energy already taking place in the city, and further Norfolk’s reputation as a dynamic city for businesses to relocate, grow or start.”

A significant number of the new jobs would be in the fields of client support and implementation, finance and IT support.

Norfolk City Council recently approved a $5 million performance-based grant for ADP, to be funded with revenue resulting from this project. According to a statement on Norfolk’s website, the grant leveraged an additional $5 million in state support for the company from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund and an additional $1.8 million from the Virginia Job Investment program.

The city also has agreed to provide below market rate parking for use by the company’s employees.

ADP, which provides payroll services and human resources management solutions, will also be eligible to receive a Major Business Facility Job Tax Credit.

ADP serves some 570, 000 clients in 125 countries. Over 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies and more than 90 Fortune 100 companies use at least one of ADP's services.
