Portsmouth-based Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA Inc. (MZB USA), a major coffee roaster, plans to introduce compostable, single-serve coffee containers in the U.S. by the end of year.

MZB USA will convert all of its single-serve containers, called “pods,” to a new format, which it expects to be certified 100 percent compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) as early as this summer.

In contrast to being recyclable or biodegradable, BPI certification means the new single-serve coffee pod will break down and decompose into compost soil and leave no toxic residue.

The new coffee pod developed by Club Coffee of Canada, will be introduced first in MZB brands Chock full o'Nuts, Hills Bros., Kauai Coffee and Segafredo Zanetti in retail, foodservice and online channels.

The compostable pods will be compatible with all Keurig K-Cup brewers, including Keurig 2.0 brewers.

The move comes in reaction to consumers’ concerns about packaging waste in using single-serve coffee containers.

MZB USA produces proprietary and private-label coffee, tea and other drinks.  It is part of the Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group, the world's largest privately owned coffee group, with nearly 50 companies operating in more than 100 countries
