Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has completed a multimillion-dollar redesign of Hotel Monaco Alexandria located in Old Town Alexandria.
The makeover included all 241 guestrooms and suites, hallway corridors, the living-room style lobby, and the addition of the Eleanor Suite – a new space designed for people to gather and dress for special events such as weddings.
David Hill of DH Design in Los Angeles was the project’s designer, and he incorporated touches that play on the area’s Civil War history. For instance, the wallpaper design in the hallways was custom made from a textile pattern from a lady’s evening dress from the late 1800s.
The 629-square-foot Eleanor Suite is named after and inspired by one of Virginia’s notable brides and socialites, the granddaughter of Martha Washington, Eleanor “Nelly” Custis.
Custis resided at nearby Mount Vernon and later at Woodlawn Plantation on a piece of land given to her as a wedding present by George Washington.
The two-room suite includes amenities such as a wet bar, a private balcony overlooking the hotel’s interior courtyard and parlor equipped with high-end beauty appliances such as ionic hairdryers and ceramic curling and flat irons for groups to use.
