PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN, KAUFMAN & CANOLES, NORFOLK
Virginia Business// August 30, 2023//
Growing up in a family that formerly owned the Daily Press newspaper in Newport News, Van Buren learned to manage a wide variety of challenges. From canyoning in the Swiss Alps to negotiating complex mergers, he’s always enjoyed learning new skills, although Van Buren says he “still gets the shakes” when he looks at the Alps photos.
Still, his thirst for learning has served him well as president and chairman of Kaufman & Canoles, a commercial law firm with more than 200 Virginia employees. Van Buren joined the firm in 1981, fresh out of the University of Virginia School of Law.
He is a past president of the Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia Law Foundation, for which he serves on the board of trustees, and he serves as chair-elect for the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. Van Buren is also on the boards for various community organizations, including the Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater, Fort Norfolk Retirement Community and Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
