As Williams endowed chair for the University of Richmond School of Law since 2004, Tobias is a prolific writer and scholar, with an emphasis on federal judicial selection. He has authored more than 200 Law Review articles in some of the country’s top law journals, including the Stanford, Columbia, California and Cornell law reviews. He has also written numerous opinion pieces for a variety of media outlets, including The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Slate and Politico. In April, Tobias discussed the $787 million Fox News-Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit settlement on “Marketplace.”
Tobias has acted as a legal consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Bar Association’s Commission on the Twenty-First Century Judiciary. Additionally, he has served as a member of the Ninth Circuit Chief District Judges Conference’s local rules review committee and the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group for the U.S. District Court for Montana.
Tobias earned his undergraduate degree at Duke University and his law degree at the University of Virginia School of Law. He has been a member of the American Law Institute since 1994.
