A leader in the energy and environmental law arena, Smith has been employed at the national law firm since 2013, after co-chairing Hunton Andrews Kurth’s global environmental practice.
Named managing partner of Troutman Pepper’s Richmond office in 2019, he specializes in litigation, enforcement defense, project development and compliance counseling. Smith also serves as water and solid waste regulation legal counsel for the Virginia Manufacturers Association, as well as director of environmental affairs for the Metallurgical Coal Producers Association. He is also legal counsel to the Corporate Environmental Enforcement Council.
In addition to being named to multiple lists of top ranked lawyers in Virginia and the United States, Smith was named one of the nation’s 50 Energy and Environmental Trailblazers by The National Law Journal.
A graduate of the University of Richmond and Vermont Law and Graduate School, Smith is a board member of the Richmond Jazz Society and Richmond art organization CultureWorks.
