Burton’s practice centers on corporate, labor, employment and immigration law, while he also manages his firm’s Hampton Roads offices. The itch to enter law began with his family. “My father was a journalist with Richmond Newspapers Inc.,” says Burton, who earned his law degree from the University of Richmond. “He was a reporter [covering] Henrico courts. He would tell stories at dinner about what he saw in court that day. … I was hooked.”
Deeply involved in Hampton Roads regional transportation, Burton has served as outside general counsel to Hampton Roads Transit since 2010. He’s a member of the executive committee at the Princess Anne Country Club, where he serves as the club’s secretary and general counsel. He is also active in the Virginia Bar Association as vice chair of the labor and employment law section council and is on track to become chair in 2024. In 2018, Burton was picked to be King Neptune, presiding over the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival, and has chaired the festival’s board since 2019.
