After more than a dozen years with Cigna Healthcare, most recently as its mid-Atlantic market president, in April Schmude stepped into the top position at rival Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which has more than 3 million customers and is one of the state’s largest health plans. She oversees about 9,000 employees.
A University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh graduate, Schmude maintains a strong connection to the community as a board member for the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Marymount University and the Choral Arts Society of Washington.

HOW I CHOSE MY CAREER: I went to college set on being a dentist. After three years of heavy science coursework, I took the advice of my academic adviser and chose a psychology class as an elective. It changed my life. I pursued a career of working to understand how businesses think and make decisions.
