Bon Secours Virginia Health System will acquire Rappahannock General Hospital (RGH) Dec. 31, making it its eighth hospital in the commonwealth.
Following the acquisition, RGH’s 450 employees will remain at the hospital.
The two health-care organizations entered a clinical affiliation in 2011, although RGH remained an independent hospital. During this time, the number of doctors and specialists grew from around 100 to more than 150 at RGH. Bon Secours also has expanded its services in the region, placing specialists in and around the hospital campus. Bon Secours recently established a home care agency in the Kilmarnock region.
The acquisition will allow RGH to recruit additional doctors and enhance training opportunities for hospital staff. RGH patients who may need care from another hospital can be transferred to a larger hospital within Bon Secours’ network.
“We are pleased to officially extend our reach and support to the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula communities through this acquisition,” Peter J. Bernard, CEO of Bon Secours Virginia, said in a statement.
