Johnson became CEO of Newport News accounting and consulting firm PBMares on Jan. 1. He’s the firm’s second CEO, having succeeded Alan S. Witt, who co-founded the company in 1979.
Johnson joined PBMares in October 2003 and has played a significant role in leading strategy and team development. He was instrumental in launching the Top 100 accounting firm’s cybersecurity and control risk services practice in 2016. Before becoming CEO, he was involved with the firm’s expansion into North Carolina with the acquisition of RSM LLP’s Morehead City and New Bern offices. Now, PBMares has 12 offices in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.
Johnson graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting. He also holds a master’s in accounting from Old Dominion University.
He is treasurer for Help and Emergency Response Inc., a Portsmouth-based domestic violence shelter organization.
