Uber announced Thursday its launching in 22 new U.S. college cities, including two in Virginia. The San Francisco-based ride-sharing company is now available in Blacksburg, home to Virginia Tech, and Charlottesville, where the University of Virginia is located.

The transportation company, which was already serving Richmond and Northern Virginia, will be offering free rides at its new locations through Sept. 1.

Earlier this month, Virginia came up with a temporary agreement that allows Uber and Lyft (another San Francisco-based ride-sharing service) to operate in the state. Both companies connect riders to background-checked drivers through their applications.

Uber and Lyft, however, have come under fire from taxi companies for being subject to few regulations. In Virginia, they must comply to certain terms until a long-term solution is found. That includes an extensive background check of drivers, a driving history review and rigorous insurance requirements.
