It’s fitting that Anna Lou and Bob Schaberg met through a local civic group, the Richmond First Club. Their partnership nearly 40 years later continues to focus on community service.
The founder of multifamily housing developer Amurcon Corp. of Virginia, Bob is a graduate of Michigan State University and earned his MBA from Wayne State University.
Anna Lou earned her master’s degree in education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1970 and worked for Richmond Public Schools for 29 years, coordinating programs for gifted students for 23 of those years.
After retiring in 2000, she became executive director of the Virginia Nonprofit Housing Coalition, which Bob founded to support affordable housing and provide college scholarships. The coalition became the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation in 2019, broadening its scope to include workforce development and refugee and elderly services.
In 2018, the Schaberg Foundation made a $1.2 million gift to the VCU School of Education, establishing a distinguished endowed professorship named for Anna Lou. Named a 2017 Alumni Star by VCU, she said “I like to invest in dedicated people and innovative approaches to critical issues.”
Married since 1986, the Schabergs received Michigan State University’s Philanthropist Award in November 2021.
