Microsoft is expanding in Mecklenburg County again. The company will invest $346.7 million to expand its data center and increase capacity to serve its customers. The expansion will create 90 new jobs.
Microsoft’s original project in Mecklenburg in 2010 involved an investment of up to $499 million and 50 new jobs. In 2011 the company invested $150 million to expand the site, and last year announced a $348 million expansion.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in a statement that Microsoft has made capital investments of more than $1.3 billion in the area since 2010. McAuliffe approved a $1.6 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund for the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission also approved $1.6 million in funds for the project.
Virginia competed against other sites in the U.S. for the expansion.
