Paul D. Camp Community College’s new president will be Corey L. McCray, who will start his position on Oct. 25.

McCray was selected among 52 applicants, according to Glenn DuBois, the chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges, who announced McCray’s selection Thursday.

“I’m confident that Corey has the skills, experience, and preparation to become an outstanding president for the college,” said DuBois in a statement. “He’s a diligent leader, an insightful person and his willingness to roll up his sleeves is just what Camp needs to attract the partners and supporters necessary for the college to grow and excel.”

McCray will be the ninth president of the college, succeeding Dan Lufkin. He has served as the college’s interim president since April and had been working as the associate vice chancellor for programs in the VCCS office.

He spent five years serving as the executive vice president for Workforce at Tidewater Community College. He also completed the Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, a master’s from Cambridge College and a doctorate from Old Dominion University.

McCray has lived and worked in Suffolk for more than 25 years, serving in the U.S. Navy, and as a high school teacher and coach. He worked at the Prudent Center for Industry and Technology, a regional career and technical education center, for more than a decade.

“I’m excited by the potential that exists here, not just at the college but throughout the community,” McCray said in a statement. “Camp’s success can be felt across our service region today. Working with the college’s dedicated faculty and staff, we can leverage state, federal and private resources to expand our program offerings, deliver them in new and creative ways, and meet the talent pipeline needs that exist today in areas like health care, skilled trades and information technology. Our team is ready to go.”
