Arlington-based Washington Headquarters Service awarded two Virginia companies spots on a potential five-year, $496 million contract to support the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Thursday.

Chantilly-based engineering and tech contractor American Systems Corp. and Alexandria-based Modern Technology Solutions Inc. (along with Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Applied Research and Associates) will compete for task orders on the contract.

The companies will provide research, development, testing and evaluation services for U.S. military technology systems, according to the DOD.

The contract is expected to be completed by November 2025.

Modern Technology Solutions Inc. employs more than 1,150 people across the U.S. and has annual revenues of more than $270 million. American Systems Corp., an employee-owned company, employs nearly 1,500 people nationwide and has $375 million in annual revenue.

Based out of the Pentagon, Washington Headquarters Service is a DOD branch responsible for providing administrative and operational support for various DOD functions in the Washington, D.C., metro area and beyond.
