The U.S. Navy awarded Newport News-based Airborne Tactical Advantage Co. (ATAC) a potential five-year, $441.58 million contract to provide subsonic and supersonic aircraft for the branch’s fleet training operations, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Wednesday.
Under the contract, ATAC will supply Type IV supersonic (which exceed the speed of sound) and Type III high subsonic (which has a maximum speed less than the speed of sound) aircraft for the Navy’s airborne threat simulation activities for the branch’s Specialized and Proven Aircraft program, according to the DOD.
About half of the work on the contract will be completed in Newport News, with the remaining 56% of work performed in California, Hawaii and Japan. It is expected that ATAC will complete its services by November 2025.
Providence, Rhode Island-based Textron Inc., a $13.6 billion contractor, is the parent company of ATAC, which provides outsourced air services and training support for squadrons, fleets and battalions.
