Falls Church-based Fortune 100 defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. announced Thursday it has won a $91 million contract to produce AN/APR-39D(V)2 digital radar warning receivers (RWR), which protect rotary and fixed-wing aircraft from modern radio frequency (RF) threats, according to the company.
RWRs are small, lightweight systems that protect from threats including radar-guided missiles and anti-aircraft artillery and are used by the U.S. Army, Navy and Marines, according to Northrop Grumman. The systems monitor 360-degree coverage areas to detect threats and determine their identity, bearing and lethality.
“As the radio frequency threat grows worldwide, the protection the AN/APR-39D(V)2 provides has become essential for our warfighters and international partners,” Ryan Tintner, Northrop Grumman vice president of navigation, targeting and survivability, said in a statement.
The systems are planned to be used on aircraft used by the Army, Navy and Marines, including AH-1Z, AH-64E, ARL-E, MV-22, UH-1Y and CH-53E/K.
Northrop Grumman employs more than 90,000 people and reported $33.8 billion in 2019 revenue.
