Norfolk ranks as the 10th best place to retire in the U.S., according to a new list compiled by the financial website CNN/Money.
The main attraction to the Hampton Roads city is the water.
“Water lovers can't go wrong settling in Norfolk, a prime jumping off point for sailing or kayaking the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic, and several nearby rivers,” the website says.
In addition to the water and beaches, other Norfolk amenities include its opera, orchestra and theater groups. In addition, the “Chrysler Museum of Art houses a massive glass collection, along with everything from Egyptian art to modern masters,” the website says.
About 25 percent of Norfolk’s population of 245,800 is over the age of 50. The overall cost of living is about even with the national average.
Raleigh, N.C., ranked first on the CNN/Money list of top places to retire.
Other cities on the list include Pittsburgh; Pa.; Lexington, Ky.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Boise, Idaho; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Colorado Springs, Colo., and Spokane, Wash.
