Virginia Beach ranks as one of the least expensive cities in terms of hotel costs in October, according to a survey of 50 popular U.S. destinations.

By contrast, Washington, D.C., was sixth most expensive in the ranking prepared by the website CheapHotels.org.

The survey reflects the average rate for each destination’s lowest available-double cost for Oct. 1-31. Only hotels rated a minimum of three stars were considered for the survey.  CheapHotels.org said the majority of big cities reach their highest hotel rates during October.

The timing of the survey, however, might mean Virginia Beach’s ranking, No. 47 among 50 cities, deserves an asterisk.

“As might be expected, certain beach destinations, such as San Diego and Virginia Beach, are more expensive during August, of course,” the Website noted.

CheapHotels.org also said a few other cities, such as  New York  and Atlanta, are slightly more expensive in September.

Boston ranked as the most expensive city with a room rate of $242 a night, followed by New York at $226 and, surprisingly, Nashville, Tenn., at $217.

Washington, at $173, ranked behind San Francisco and Austin, Texas, as among the most expensive cities.

The least expensive lodgings were found at Orlando, $45; Las Vegas, $49; Tuscon, Ariz., $67; and Virginia Beach, $68.

The 50 cities picked for the survey had to have a population of at least 200,000 based on the number hotels they have. Hotels surveyed had to be within one mile of the city’s center.
