Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose a tenth of a percentage point in August to 5.8 percent.
The increase marked the fourth consecutive month that the jobless rate has risen, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
The seasonally adjusted rate takes into account seasonal fluctuates in the labor market.
The August 2013 rate was one tenth of a percentage point below the August 2012 rate of 5.9 percent.
The August 2013 rate also was 1.4 percentage points below the national jobless rate of 7.3 percent.
The unemployment report showed that employment fell in seven major industries while increasing in four.
The largest decrease in employment took place in trade and transportation, down 3,900 jobs to 636,200.
The biggest employment gain took place in professional and business services, up 3,000 jobs to 682,300.
