Brooks Smith, a well-known environmental and administrative lawyer, has become a partner and a member of the environmental and natural resources practice in the Richmond office of Troutman Sanders.

Smith was co-chair of the environmental practice at Hunton & Williams.

“Brooks is extremely well-respected in Virginia, as well as nationally, for his ground-breaking work in the environmental area,” John West, managing partner of Troutman Sanders’ Richmond office, said in a statement. “His insights and experience will be of great benefit to clients as they navigate the increasingly complex and stringent web of environmental regulations.”

Smith’s practice focuses on a wide range of issues under the Clean Water Act and other areas of environmental law.  He helped develop the first interstate water quality trading program in the country for nutrients entering the Ohio River.

He is the author of three books on Richmond history and has been a regular commentator on public radio. He also has served on a number of local nonprofit boards and foundations.

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree the University of Richmond and a law degree from Vermont Law School.
