Following Gov. Ralph Northam’s announcement on Aug. 7 that the eviction moratorium would be extended through Sept. 7, U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine on Monday announced that $8.79 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding will go to affordable housing in Virginia.

“As housing insecurity continues to rise for many Virginians, now more than ever, Congress needs to offer critical assistance to those in need,” the senators said in a joint statement. “We’re pleased to announce these federal funds that will go directly towards supporting some of the most vulnerable communities right now.”

The nearly $9 million Housing Choice Voucher Program will be divided among all major regions in Virginia, which includes 39 individual housing authorities or programs. Congress allocated $1.25 billion through the CARES act toward tenant-based rental assistance, which funds the Housing Choice Voucher program.

The program is intended to assist lower-income families, elderly people and individuals with disabilities to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing. The Virginia Housing Development Authority (in Richmond) and the Fairfax County Redevelopment & Housing Authority were the only two entities to be allocated more than $1 million.
