Smith Enterprises has selected Building and Design of Virginia Inc. in Wytheville as general contractor for the redevelopment of the historic George Wythe Hotel in downtown Wytheville.

“We are working toward a 12-month construction period,” William J. “Bill” Smith, the project’s developer, said in a statement. The renovated property will offer 30 guest rooms, conference and meeting rooms, a lounge, outside event venue, and restaurant.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to help reshape downtown Wytheville by converting this empty historic property into an economic anchor. We believe this project will create a great deal of attention that will draw both new businesses and consumers to our downtown,” said Smith.

Built in 1927, the hotel remained in operation as a hotel until 1970 when it was acquired by The Bank of Speedwell. Then it operated as a bank until 2010, with BB&T the last bank in the building.
