The country’s largest drugstore chain continues to expand in the Richmond region. Morgan Property Group (MPG) has opened a new Walgreens drugstore at the northwest corner of Broad Street and Pouncey Tract Road in Henrico County.
This is the nineteenth Walgreens project developed by MPG in Virginia, and the eleventh in metro Richmond.
According to MPG, this is the first Walgreens store in the region to feature the chain’s “pharmacy of the future.” Under this model, the pharmacist works in front of, rather than behind, the pharmacy counter. The idea is to relieve in-store pharmacists of certain tasks so they can have more time to offer medication therapy management services to customers.
MPG, a commercial real estate development firm based out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., assembled the 1.6-acre site for the 12,144-square-foot Walgreens in January 2012. The drugstore is located just east of the Short Pump Town Center mall.
Walgreens, which had sales of $72 billion in fiscal 2012, operates 8,067 drugstores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
