BAE Systems Inc. has created a new senior executive position as part of its strategy to expand its export business as the U.S. defense spending falters.

The company has named employee John Suttle senior vice president of international business development.

Suttle has been senior vice president of communications for the company, which is the U.S. subsidiary of BAE Systems plc, a defense, security and aerospace company.

In his new role, Suttle will look to expand BAE Systems’ international business.

“The creation of the International Business Development role is consistent with the company’s strategy to emphasize exports as the U.S. defense market declines,” Linda P. Hudson, president and CEO of BAE Systems Inc., said in a statement. “John has a broad understanding of our markets and customers and will be a significant asset in shaping and delivering our international strategy.”

Before joining BAE Systems, Suttle was senior director of communications for General Dynamics’ Armament and Technical Products division.

Suttle is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. He serves as a board member of the Carolinas Historic Aviation Commission and Assisting Single Parents in Realizing Higher Education. He also serves on the USO Board of Governors.

Hudson will act as the senior vice president of Communications at BAE Systems until a successor is named.
