Free program aims to help older job seekers

A free program designed to help older job seekers will begin June 20 in Lynchburg.

“Wisdom at Work” is a new program aimed at offering support, job search tips, basic computer training, and other useful information to job seekers ages 50 and over. The program will be held on Thursdays at Marsh Memorial United Methodist, 20348 Leesville Road, from 9-11 a.m.

The Beard Center on Aging at Lynchburg College, Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board, and the Virginia Employment Commission collaborated on the project.

Topics to be covered during the year include local resources, job hunting tips, surviving unemployment, the computer job search, self-esteem, age discrimination, successful interviewing, resume development, and more.

The following topics have already been announced:

June 20 – An Overview of Virginia Employment Commission Services & Job Search Resources for Older Job Seekers by Sharon Waddell, Workforce Services Representative (Re-Employment Specialist) and Robert Berry, Workforce Services Representative (Re-Employment Specialist)

July 18 – Workforce Investment Act: Employment and Training Services For Older Job Seekers by Deborah Alfers, Region 2000 Workforce Center Manager

August 15 – Senior Community Service Employment Program – Goodwill Older Worker Program led by B. Gale Vest, Senior Community Service Employment Program Director

September 19 – Central Virginia Community College Resources for the Older Job Seeker led by Ruth Hendrick – Vice President, Workforce Solutions & Community Education
