Virginia breaks record, reporting 602 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours

Virginia has seen its largest one-day increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases — 602 more since Thursday, according to the Virginia Department of Health’s update Friday, April 17. The state has 7,491 cases.

The previous one-day record, set on Saturday, was 568.

The health department also reported 231 deaths, 1,221 hospitalizations and 48,997 people tested for the virus Friday.

The U.S. saw a record number of COVID-19-related deaths Thursday, with 4,591 people nationwide reported as dying from the disease in 24 hours. The previous one-day record was set the day before, with 2,569 deaths.

According to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association’s COVID-19 dashboard, 1,308 people with either confirmed positive tests or results pending are currently hospitalized in Virginia; 400 are in ICUs, and 224 are on ventilators. VHHA also reports that 1,110 people who were hospitalized have now been discharged.
