Two men in their 70s who were hospitalized have died from COVID-19, the Richmond City Health District reported Tuesday evening. They are the first virus fatalities in the city.

Both had underlying chronic health conditions, according to a news release from Mayor Levar Stoney’s office, and had recently worked in New Jersey.

“The Richmond City Health District is in communication with state health authorities and is conducting an investigation to determine those who may have come into contact with the men,” the release says.

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 27 deaths across the state, as well as 1,250 positive cases. Richmond has 26 positive cases as of the last update.
