Buc-ee’s hiring for first Virginia location opening in June

If you’ve always dreamed of spending your working hours surrounded by Beaver Nuggets, you’re in luck.

Buc-ee’s — the Texas-based chain of travel centers that has amassed a league of passionate fans — held a multiday hiring event May 13-15 at the Hotel Madison Shenandoah Valley Conference Center for its upcoming 74,000-square-foot Rockingham County  location, which is expected to open June 30.

Located at the intersection of Interstate 81 and Friedens Church Road, the Mount Crawford center will be the mega travel center chain’s first location in Virginia.

The Mt. Crawford Buc-ee’s will offer 120 fueling stations and the chain’s famously clean restrooms. It’s expected to create 200 jobs.

Positions to be filled include cashier, janitorial service, maintenance and workers in deli/food service, grocery and gift departments. Starting pay ranges were between $18 and $24 an hour, with full-time positions available.

Buc-ee’s broke ground on the Rockingham County location on Jan. 30, 2024, after buying 21.3 acres for $6.6 million in September 2023.

In a 2023 news release, S.L. Nusbaum Realty said Buc-ee’s is planning to open four Virginia locations over the next several years.

In June 2023, Buc-ee’s paid $6.5 million for about 28 acres in New Kent County east of Richmond, at Exit 211 off Interstate 64.

Although Buc-ee’s initially planned to open the New Kent location by 2025, according to a 2023 S.L. Nusbaum Realty news release, its expected opening has been pushed to 2027 to coordinate with road construction projects.

In February 2024, Buc-ee’s submitted a conditional use permit application to Stafford County for a 74,000-square-foot travel center on about 36 acres by Exit 140 off Interstate 95. In March, Buc-ee’s submitted a request to rezone the property from B-2 zoning for urban commercial to B-1 zoning for convenience commercial.

“Staff is in the process of reviewing the new rezoning application and previously submitted conditional use permit application,” a county spokesperson said in a statement. “Comments will be complete by the end of April and provided to the applicant for them to address.”

Founded in 1982, Buc-ee’s has 51 locations in the Lone Star State, Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee.
