Richmond-based architecture firm launches new studio, names director

Richmond-based architecture firm Glavé & Holmes Architecture has named Susan Reed as the director of its new studio focused on historic preservation. 

With the addition of Reed’s studio, the firm now comprises seven studios and employs more than 70 people. Glavé & Holmes Architecture serves higher education institutions, cultural institutions, urban architecture, hospitality and interior design. The staff at the firm includes architectural historians, historic architects and project managers.

Reed will oversee the firm’s historic preservation efforts, manage design projects and develop business initiatives for any project that has a historic component. She has more than 20 years of experience in historic preservation, including certified historic rehabilitation tax-credit projects. 

Reed has performed condition assessments, feasibility studies and restoration and rehabilitation design projects for theaters, museums, academic buildings, warehouses and other structures. Her current and most recent projects include Scott House at Virginia Commonwealth University, Carr’s Hill at the University of Virginia, Wilson Hall at James Madison University and Waterford Mill in Loudoun County.

Reed joined the firm as an associate in 2017, and previously worked at Commonwealth Architects in Richmond and McCall Design Group in San Francisco. She serves on the boards for The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Richmond and the Byrd Theatre Foundation. She also serves on the advisory council and rehabilitation task force of the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design in Richmond.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in art history and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Virginia.
