Title: Neutral, The McCammon Group; Judge, Chesterfield County Circuit Court (Ret.)
Birthplace: Greenville, South Carolina
Education: Bachelor’s degree, East Carolina University; master’s degree, University of the Americas; law degree, University of Richmond
Spouse: Jody H. Allen
Children: Kathryn and her husband, Steven (parents of my two dear granddaughters); John and his wife, Cristi; Elizabeth and her husband, Ian (due to deliver my first grandson in February); and Margaret (to be married to future son-in-law Tim in April).
First job as a lawyer: After a clerkship at the Supreme Court of Virginia, I joined a small litigation practice, then formed a firm with my law school roommate, law partner and ultimate colleague on the bench, Judge Frederick Rockwell III.
Fan of: I’m a fan of teams from all the universities my kids attended: Washington & Lee, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Columbia and Emory.
Recently read book: Walter Isaacson’s biography of Leonardo da Vinci.
Career mentors: Many older and wiser judges and lawyers, but especially Virginia Chief Justice Harry Carrico and Chesterfield Circuit Judge Ernest Gates, each of whom modeled steady temperament, careful judgment and fidelity to the law.
How does your experience as a judge affect the way you approach ADR cases? It enables me, I hope, to speak with some credibility to the parties about the advantages of the mediation process as compared with the uncertainties of litigation. Not only do they avoid risk and cost and delay, but — most importantly — in mediation they decide the outcome of the case for themselves.
