WillowTree Inc., a mobile applications developer, will invest $12.3 million to relocate and expand its headquarters in Albemarle County.

The company plans to renovate and lease 50,000 square feet in the former Woolen Mills factory.

The expansion is expected to create 200 jobs, doubling the workforce at WillowTree.

WillowTree was founded in 2007.

Its clients include Regal Cinemas, Wyndham Hotels, BabyCenter (a Johnson & Johnson company), GE, AOL, PepsiCo and the University of Virginia.

Virginia competed against North Carolina for the project.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Albemarle County and the Central Virginia Partnership to secure the project.

Gov. Ralph Northam approved a $500,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Albemarle County.

The governor also approved $1.5 million in funds from the Virginia Economic Development Incentive Grant.

WillowTree also is eligible to receive a Major Business Facility Job Tax Credit.

Funding and services to support the company’s expansion will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
