The spy-thriller television series “Homeland” will be filmed in the Richmond area this fall.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced on Tuesday that the award-winning series will film its seventh season in Central Virginia. The episodes will be shown on the Showtime network next year.

The series is produced for Showtime by Fox21 Television Studios.

Production of “Homeland,” which stars Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, returned to the U.S. last year after spending the two previous seasons shooting in South Africa and Germany.

The “Homeland”anouncement follows the recent end of production of two other TV series in the Richmond area, AMC’s “Turn: Washington’s Spies” and PBS’ “Mercy Street.”

“The film production industry is a significant economic driver for our commonwealth,” McAuliffe said in a statement. “With every new film or television series that comes to Virginia, this thriving industry continues creating jobs, generating tourist activity and building momentum for even more great new projects.”

“Homeland” is eligible to receive a Virginia film tax credit and grant.  The exact amount will be based on the number of Virginia workers hired, Virginia goods and services purchased, and deliverables including Virginia tourism promotions.

The TV series was developed by Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon. “Homeland” is based on the Israeli series “Prisoners of War” by Gideon Raff.
