Dominion holds groundbreaking ceremony on new 20-story tower

Dominion is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony today for its new 20-story tower in downtown Richmond.

The 417-foot-tall, 960,000-square-foot facility at 111 S. Sixth Street is located at what was the site for the Richmond Plaza building, a six-story structure that was demolished.

Construction already has begun on Dominion’s project, which is expected to be completed in early 2019.  The new building will house retail space and more than 1,000 Dominion employees.

Richmond-based Hourigan Construction and its joint venture partner, Clayco of Chicago, are heading up the design/build team for the project.

The ceremony will get underway at 2:30 p.m. at the site. Tom Farrell, Dominion’s chairman, president and CEO; Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones and Mark Hourigan, owner and president of
Hourigan Construction, will be attending.

The new tower is across the street from Dominion’s existing 21-story office tower, One James River Plaza, at 701 East Cary St. Company officials have said previously that they are taking a hard look at that building to see if it should be refurbished or demolished with a new building erected in its place.

Currently, Dominion has about 2,400 downtown employees in several buildings: a three-building corporate headquarters complex on Tredegar Street, One James River Plaza, the 20-story Eighth and Main Building and a couple of buildings on Grayland Ave.
