VCU holds ribbon-cutting for Children’s Pavilion

Virginia Commonwealth University on Wednesday held a ribbon-cutting for its $200 million outpatient medical facility for children in downtown Richmond.

The 15-story, 640,000-square-foot Children’s Pavilion, part of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, brings together nearly all of the university’s pediatric outpatient services under one roof.

VCU said that 90 percent of pediatric care takes place on an outpatient basis.

Services housed in the building include radiology, same-day surgery, lab testing, dialysis and infusions in an environment, VCU said, is custom-made for kids.

Many services previously provided in adult areas of VCU Medical Center, such as orthopedics and neurosurgery, will now be provided in pediatric-only spaces. Also multidisciplinary clinics provided by Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s Brook Road campus will relocate to the new facility.

The Children’s Pavilion has a 600-space garage offering valet and self-parking options.The facility will begin serving patients on March 21.

HKS Inc. was the architect of the project, with construction by Skanska USA Building Inc. and project management by JLL.
