Barkin has served as head of one of 12 regional Fed banks since 2018, overseeing the Fifth District, which includes South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Maryland. Previously a voting member on the Fed’s powerful interest-setting Federal Open Market Committee in 2024, he rotated off in 2025 and is currently an alternate member.
In January, Barkin said the nation’s unemployment rate, 4.4% for December 2025, was low historically, but the labor market is soft, and inflation has remained above the Federal Reserve‘s 2% target for nearly five years.
A Tampa, Florida, native, Barkin worked for three decades at global consultancy McKinsey & Co., where his roles included chief financial officer and chief risk officer. A three-time Harvard grad, Barkin has sat on Emory University’s board of trustees since 2014 and served on the board of directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta from 2009 to 2014.
