A three-time Democratic U.S. representative in Central Virginia, Spanberger was sworn in as the state’s first female governor in January. She won by a 15-point margin and led a Democratic sweep of the state’s top elected offices.
A former CIA officer and U.S. Postal Inspection Service law enforcement officer, Spanberger has forged a reputation as a moderate Democrat, being ranked the state’s most bipartisan member of Congress by The Lugar Center and Georgetown University.
In her first speech as governor to the Virginia legislature, the University of Virginia alumna emphasized unity, even as her party increased its majority in the House of Delegates and retained control of the Virginia Senate.
On her first day in office, Spanberger ordered each executive branch agency to submit reports within 90 days identifying ways to reduce costs for Virginians and created a task force to respond to federal workforce reductions and funding cuts. Spanberger also named 27 new board members for U.Va., Virginia Military Institute and George Mason University.
