Schmidt became JMU’s seventh president in July 2025, having most recently served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he was recognized as a “stellar fundraiser” and secured one of the largest gifts in that university’s history: a $70 million donation to build an indoor athletics facility and event center. He holds a doctorate in educational policy and administration from the University of Minnesota.
